「I Have a Dream」1963年のいわゆる「ワシントン大行進」で行われた演説。
全米各地から２０万人もの人々によるワシントンへのデモ、黒人の公民権・差別撤廃を訴えた、その行進の最後の記念すべき演説

Five score years ago, a great American,in whose symbolic shadow we stand today,signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
(100年前、一人の偉大なアメリカ人が、今日私たちはその人の象徴的な影を落としているこの地に立っていますが、奴隷解放宣言に署名しました)

(I have a dream that one day) this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed :“We hold these truths to be self-evident ; that all men are created equal”
(いつの日かこの国が立ち上がり、その信条の真に意味することを貫くのだという夢が私にはあります。すなわち、「すべての人間は平等に創られているのだ、というこれらの真理を我々は自明であると考える」という信条です)

Ｉhave a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit dowwn together at the table of brotherhood.
(いつの日か、ジョージアの赤い丘の上で、かつての奴隷の子孫と奴隷所有者の子孫が同胞としてのテーブルに同席することができるであろうという夢が私にはあります)

I have a dream ― That one day even the State of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
(私には夢があります ― いつの日か、不正という炎熱にうだり、圧制という炎熱にうだっているミシシッピー州ですら、自由と正義のオアシスに変えられるという。)

I have a dream ― That my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their charactor. I have a dream today―
(私には夢があります―私の４人の幼い子どもたちがいつか皮膚の色によってではなく、人格の中身によって評価されるような国に住めるようになるだろうという。私には夢があります)

徹底した非暴力運動の中で、丸腰の黒人青年に警察犬をけしかけ襲わせている警官や、警棒で滅多打ちにする警官、高圧ホースで水をかける警官、それらの黒人への仕打ちを見ていた有色人種ではない人々が涙を流して、それらの暴力を批判し始めたという、この運動の勝利のしかたに感動します。
